An alternative tonewood found on the coastal mountains and hills of Africa, Sapele (sometimes Sapele Mahogany, Sapelli or Sapeli), has been utilized by Taylor, Martin and others for sometime. It has been touted as a highly sustainable wood with similar tonal qualities and look to Mahogany - so much so that it is sometimes mistakenly referred to as African Mahogany.
We particularly like its look and when used on an acoustic guitar, Sapele possesses a powerful midrange tone with a little bit more coming through on the high-end.
